The property that is now home to Punt Road Wines began its wine story in the 1860s when two brothers from Switzerland, Paul and Hubert de Castella, followed the Yarra River out from Melbourne to what is now the Yarra Valley. They established St.Huberts Vineyard on the current property, with over 100 acres under vine and some of the grandest local buildings of the time including a beautiful state-of-the-art winery, underground cellars, a dairy, and stables.
Our Yarra Valley winery was named after the famous Melbourne inner city thoroughfare that joins the northern suburbs to the south. The inspiration came from a photograph from 1856 which shows Punt Road as it meets the Yarra River. The only way across the river was via the punt, hence the road’s name. What caught our imagination was the hill in the background; while now a major part of the suburb of South Yarra, back then it was an expansive vineyard and one of the first planted in Victoria. It’s hard to believe that the busy road of today was once not much more than a dirt track and some of Melbourne’s most expensive real estate was once a vineyard. This is a little known part of Melbourne’s history and through our name, many people now know the story.
